State of the University, 2018

UM System President Mun Choi delivered a public address, "Excellence through Innovation: A New University of Missouri System," on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018.

Reflecting the five Missouri Compacts for Achieving Excellence, the address outlined $260 million in investments for strategic priorities over the next five years. The one-time money is provided by the UM System with the expectation of university matches to be used to invest in students, faculty and staff through each university's strategic plan.

Missouri Compacts for Achieving Excellence

The Missouri Compacts for Achieving Excellence provide unifying principles that inform and guide the four universities and their strategic plans.
 

Student successStudent Success

  • $75 million - Promise & Opportunity Scholarships - Scholarships will be available to students based on need.
  • $25 million - Next Generation Merit Scholarships - Scholarships to recruit academically outstanding Missouri students to the four universities.
  • $20 million - Digital Learning Initiatives - Grow online and distance-learning opportunities, reduce the cost of traditional education and increase the number of online degrees granted.

Research and creative worksResearch and Creative Works

  • $50 million - Research and Creative Works - Leaders hope this infusion of funds will spur collaborative, multi-investigator proposals that lead to more external research funding.
  • $50 million - Precision Medicine Initiative and the Translational Precision Medicine Complex - This investment will provide UM researchers with the latest technology as they seek answers to complex medical questions.
  • $12 million - Distinguished Professorships - This initiative will help university leaders attract members of the National Academies who will significantly increase scholarly and research output.

Engagement and outreachEngagement and Outreach

  • $10 million - Engagement and Outreach - This investment will provide UM researchers with the latest technology as they seek answers to complex medical questions.
  • $1.25 million - MO SourceLink - Support the expansion of KC SourceLink to MO SourceLink with the partnership of the Missouri Technology Corporation. MO SourceLink will connect small business and startups in the state with resources to achieve success.

Inclusive excellenceInclusive Excellence

  • $8.5 million - Inclusive Excellence - This initiative will support recruitment and retention of faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
  • $250,000 - American Public Square - American Public Square, founded by a UMKC professor, will provide opportunities to bring non-like-minded individuals together at our universities for fact-based, civil conversations about important issues.

Planning, Operations and StewardshipPlanning, Operations and Stewardship

  • $7.5 million - Faculty and Staff Success - These funds will be invested in faculty and staff to improve the culture of the university, establish effective orientation programs for new employees and develop strong professional development programs.
